Once your caravan is tucked away for winter, it’s easy to forget about it until spring. However, mid-winter is the ideal time to carry out a quick check. Cold, damp weather can reveal problems that weren’t obvious earlier in the season, and catching them now can prevent costly repairs later.
These simple mid-winter checks won’t take long and can make a big difference to your caravan’s condition and lifespan.
1. Exterior Check – After Bad Weather
Winter storms, frost, and heavy rain can all take their toll.
Walk around the caravan and check for obvious damage
Look closely at seals around windows, doors, rooflights, and lockers
Check for cracks in plastic trims or covers caused by frost
If you use a cover, make sure it’s secure and hasn’t rubbed against the bodywork
Spotting small issues now can stop water ingress before it becomes a damp problem.
2. Check for Damp and Condensation
Mid-winter is when damp is most likely to appear.

Check inside cupboards, corners, and under seating
Feel for cold or damp patches around windows and walls
Empty or replace moisture absorbers if they’re full
Make sure fixed ventilation points remain clear
Even when not in use, your caravan still needs airflow to stay healthy.
3. Quick Interior Inspection
A brief look inside can reveal early warning signs.
Check upholstery and bedding for signs of moisture or mould
Make sure lockers and wardrobe doors are still left slightly open
Look for signs of rodents, especially if stored in rural areas
Confirm nothing has fallen or shifted during storage
Catching issues early makes them far easier to deal with.
4. Water System and Frost Protection

Even if you drained down your system at the start of winter, it’s worth checking again.
Confirm taps are still open
Check drain valves haven’t been knocked closed
Make sure the toilet cassette and flush system remain empty
Look underneath for signs of leaks or split pipes
Repeated freeze–thaw cycles can cause damage if any water is trapped.
5. Battery and Electrical Check
If your leisure battery is stored separately, check its charge level
Top it up using a smart charger if required
Inspect battery terminals for corrosion
Check external plugs and sockets for water ingress
A neglected battery over winter is one of the most common causes of springtime problems.
6. Tyres, Brakes, and Standing Care

Caravans don’t enjoy sitting still for long periods.
Check tyre pressures if weather allows
Look for visible cracking or flat spots
Ensure wheel covers are still fitted correctly
If safe to do so, slightly move the caravan to change tyre position
These checks help protect tyres and braking components until touring season returns.
7. Security Check

Winter storage is a good time to confirm everything is still secure.
Check hitch locks and wheel clamps are firmly in place
Inspect locks for signs of corrosion or stiffness
Ensure storage site rules are still being met
Remove any valuables that may have been overlooked
Also give your security locks a lubrication with WD40 or something simialr
A quick check provides peace of mind through the quieter months.
Ready for the Final Stretch of Winter
A mid-winter check doesn’t need to be complicated or time-consuming, but it can prevent unpleasant surprises when spring arrives. By spending a little time checking on your caravan now, you’ll protect your investment and make your return to touring far smoother.
If you need moisture absorbers, battery chargers, tyre covers, or security accessories, choosing caravan-specific products can make all the difference during winter storage.
Here’s to a trouble-free end to winter and an early start to the next adventure 🚐❄️
