Reliable internet can be difficult to find when touring in a caravan, motorhome or campervan. Mobile reception is often weak at rural campsites, while the quality and coverage of campsite Wi-Fi can vary considerably.
We recently used a Starlink Mini with a Starlink Roam package during a 10-day family holiday at Monkton Wyld Holiday Park near Charmouth. Here is how we installed it, what it cost and how well it worked for two adults and our children.
What is the Starlink Mini?
The Starlink Mini is a compact satellite internet system designed for travelling. Instead of depending on a nearby mobile phone mast or campsite Wi-Fi network, it connects to Starlink satellites overhead.

Its smaller size makes it particularly suitable for caravans, motorhomes and campervans. It can be packed away between trips and moved to whichever position offers the clearest view of the sky.
The Starlink Mini also has a built-in Wi-Fi router. We therefore did not need to carry, connect or configure a separate router.
Starlink Mini and Roam costs in the UK
At the time of writing in August 2026, the Starlink Mini equipment costs approximately £179 from major UK retailers. This is a one-off purchase and is separate from the monthly Starlink Roam subscription.
The main UK Roam packages are:
Roam 100GB – £55 per month: Includes 100GB of high-speed data. Once the allowance has been used, the connection continues with unlimited data at a much lower speed.
Roam Unlimited – £100 per month: Includes unlimited high-speed Roam data.
Standby Mode – £9 per month: Reduces the subscription when the full service is not required, while retaining low-speed access for emergency messaging, account management and easy reactivation.
Based on an equipment price of £179, the approximate initial cost is:
£234 for the Starlink Mini and the first month of Roam 100GB
£279 for the Starlink Mini and the first month of Roam Unlimited
Delivery charges or promotional discounts may affect the final price.
The £9 Standby Mode is particularly useful for seasonal touring. When the caravan, motorhome or campervan is not being used, the full Roam service can be paused through the Starlink account.
It is important to note that pausing is no longer completely free. Starlink now charges £9 per month for Standby Mode. Prices and plan conditions can change, so check the official Starlink UK Roam page before ordering.
Why not rely on campsite Wi-Fi?
Many campsites offer Wi-Fi, but its reliability can vary. A connection may work well around reception and the main facilities and wifi masts but become weaker on pitches farther away.
Campsite Wi-Fi is also shared by other guests. It may become slower during busy periods when lots of people are browsing, streaming or connecting several devices. Some sites include Wi-Fi in the pitch price, while others charge separately or only provide coverage in designated areas.
This does not mean that all campsite Wi-Fi is unreliable. Some holiday parks offer an excellent service. However, travelling with a Starlink Mini gives you your own connection that is not dependent on the campsite’s Wi-Fi coverage, the position of your pitch or the number of guests using its network.
Our 10-day family test near Charmouth
We used our Starlink Mini with the Roam package throughout a 10-day stay at Monkton Wyld Holiday Park near Charmouth.
Our family included two adults and our two Grand Children, so we had several phones and other devices requiring internet access during the holiday. This gave us a much better test than simply switching the equipment on briefly at home.
Having our own Wi-Fi connection was extremely convenient. The adults could browse, check emails, research local attractions and plan days out, while the children could use their connected devices streaming etc. An added bonus was being able to set timings when the system was on or off, by using the starlink app, so no late night use of the internet!
The Starlink connection worked well throughout our stay and was available both inside and outside the caravan.
Positioning the Starlink Mini on our caravan
We placed the Starlink Mini on the caravan roof near the main skylight. This provided a good view of the sky while keeping the equipment accessible when setting up and packing away.

Starlink requires a reasonably clear view overhead. Trees, buildings and other obstructions can interrupt the connection, so the best position will depend on the pitch.
The compact size of the Mini made it easy to position on the caravan. The same principle should work well with a motorhome or campervan, although owners should select a secure location appropriate for their particular vehicle.
Care must be taken when putting equipment on a vehicle roof. The Starlink Mini should be positioned securely, without obstructing skylights or roof vents. It should be removed and packed away before travelling unless a suitable permanent installation has been fitted.
The long power cable was a major advantage
One feature we particularly appreciated was the length of the supplied power cable.
The cable was long enough to route around the caravan and reach the position we had selected near the main skylight. We were not forced to place the Mini immediately beside a power socket or in a location with a poor view of the sky.
This flexibility should be equally helpful in a motorhome or campervan, where power sockets and suitable equipment positions may be some distance apart.
Cables should be routed carefully so they do not create a trip hazard or become trapped in a window, door, skylight or roof mechanism.
Easy directional setup with the Starlink app
Setting up the Starlink Mini was straightforward. The Starlink app guided us through the process and showed us how to position the unit in the correct direction.
We did not need any specialist knowledge about satellites or aerial alignment. We followed the directional instructions in the app and adjusted the Mini until it indicated that the position was suitable.
The app can also check the surrounding area for obstructions. This is useful when deciding whether to position the Mini on the vehicle roof or somewhere else on the pitch.
Once the Mini was connected to power and correctly positioned, it established a satellite connection without any complicated technical configuration.
No separate Wi-Fi router required
he Starlink Mini has its Wi-Fi router built into the unit. This meant we did not need to purchase or carry an additional router.
Once the Mini was powered and connected, we joined its Wi-Fi network directly from our phones and other devices. The network name and password can be configured through the Starlink app.
Having everything integrated into one compact unit makes the Starlink Mini especially convenient for touring. It reduces the amount of equipment and cabling that must be stored, which is particularly valuable in a campervan where space can be limited.
Did it work inside and outside the caravan?
Yes. The Starlink Mini provided a usable Wi-Fi connection both inside and outside our caravan throughout the 10-day stay.
We could connect while sitting inside the caravan, and the Wi-Fi signal remained available when we moved outdoors. It supported the devices used by both the adults and children in our family.

The system was useful for everyday browsing, emails, entertainment and planning activities. It could also be valuable for people who need to work remotely from their caravan, motorhome or campervan, subject to their chosen data allowance and local conditions.
Starlink performance will vary according to the campsite, surrounding trees, nearby buildings, weather and other obstructions. Our experience at Monkton Wyld Holiday Park near Charmouth was positive.
Is Starlink Mini with Roam worth it?
Based on our experience, the Starlink Mini with a Roam package is an appealing option for touring families and anyone who regularly stays at campsites with poor mobile reception or inconsistent Wi-Fi.
The main benefits we found were:
Compact equipment suitable for touring
Straightforward setup through the Starlink app
Simple directional guidance
A very long power cable
Flexible positioning around the caravan
A built-in Wi-Fi router
No separate router to carry or configure
Wi-Fi coverage inside and outside the caravan
Support for multiple family devices
Independence from campsite Wi-Fi
The ability to switch to £9-per-month Standby Mode
The main consideration is cost. The equipment currently costs around £179, followed by £55 per month for Roam 100GB or £100 per month for Roam Unlimited.
For occasional touring, the £9 Standby Mode makes it possible to reduce the ongoing charge between trips. For frequent travellers, families, remote workers or anyone who regularly visits campsites with unreliable connectivity, the independence offered by Starlink may justify the additional expense.
Frequently asked questions about Starlink Mini and Roam
Does Starlink Mini work with a caravan?
Yes. We used our Starlink Mini with a caravan for 10 days at Monkton Wyld Holiday Park near Charmouth. We positioned it on the caravan roof near the main skylight, where it had a clear view of the sky.
Can Starlink Mini be used with motorhomes and campervans?
Yes. Its compact, portable design makes it suitable for caravans, motorhomes and campervans. The best position will depend on the vehicle, available power supply and surrounding obstructions.
Does Starlink Mini need a separate router?
No. The Starlink Mini has a built-in Wi-Fi router. Our phones and other devices connected directly to its Wi-Fi network, so we did not need to purchase or configure another router.
Does Starlink work inside a caravan?
The Starlink Mini itself needs a clear view of the sky, so we placed it outside on the caravan roof. Its Wi-Fi connection worked well on our devices both inside and outside the caravan.
How easy is Starlink Mini to set up?
We found it very easy. The Starlink app provided directional guidance and helped us position the Mini correctly. Once it was connected to power and aligned, it established a connection without any complicated configuration.
Does Starlink Mini need to point in a particular direction?
Yes, but the Starlink app shows you how to position it. You do not need specialist knowledge of satellites or aerial alignment. Simply follow the guidance displayed in the app.
Does Starlink need a clear view of the sky?
Yes. Trees, buildings and other obstructions can interrupt the satellite connection. The Starlink app can help check a proposed location for obstructions before you complete the setup.
How much does Starlink Mini cost in the UK?
At the time of writing, the Starlink Mini equipment costs approximately £179 from major UK retailers. Prices and promotions can change, so compare the Starlink website with authorised retailers before buying.
How much is the Starlink Roam package?
The UK Roam 100GB plan currently costs £55 per month, while Roam Unlimited costs £100 per month. These prices are separate from the initial equipment purchase.
Can the Starlink Roam service be paused?
Yes. Starlink Roam can be placed into Standby Mode when the full service is not required. At the time of writing, Standby Mode costs £9 per month and provides low-speed connectivity for emergency messaging, account access and easy reactivation.
Is pausing Starlink Roam free?
No. Starlink previously offered a free pause option, but the current UK Standby Mode costs £9 per month. Starlink can change its prices and terms, so always check your account before pausing.
Is the Starlink Mini power cable long enough for a caravan?
We found the supplied power cable very generous. It was long enough to route around our caravan and reach the Mini on the roof near the main skylight. The cable should be positioned carefully to prevent trips or damage.
Can several people use Starlink Mini simultaneously?
Yes. During our holiday, two adults and two children connected their devices to the Starlink Wi-Fi. Actual performance will depend on signal quality, the selected package and what each person is doing online.
Can you stream television using Starlink Roam?
Starlink can support streaming when it has a good satellite connection. However, video can consume a substantial amount of data. Households using the 100GB package should monitor their usage through the Starlink app.
What happens after using the 100GB allowance?
After the Roam 100GB high-speed allowance has been used, Starlink says the service continues with unlimited low-speed data. Activities such as high-quality streaming, large downloads and video calls may then become limited.
Is Starlink better than campsite Wi-Fi?
That depends on the campsite. Some holiday parks provide excellent Wi-Fi, while others may have weak coverage on certain pitches or become slower during busy periods. Starlink gave us a private connection that did not depend on the campsite’s Wi-Fi network.
Can Starlink Mini be left on the roof while travelling?
Our Starlink Mini was used as a portable setup and packed away before travelling. Do not leave a portable unit unsecured on a caravan, motorhome or campervan roof while driving. Permanent installations require appropriate mounts and must follow Starlink’s instructions.
Is Starlink Mini worth buying for occasional holidays?
It may be worthwhile if you frequently stay where mobile reception or campsite Wi-Fi is unreliable. Occasional users should consider the equipment cost, monthly Roam charge and £9 Standby Mode fee when deciding whether it represents good value.
Our verdict
After using the Starlink Mini with a Roam package for 10 days at Monkton Wyld Holiday Park near Charmouth, we found it easy to set up and convenient to use.
We placed the Mini on our caravan roof near the main skylight. The long power cable allowed us to route it around the caravan, while the Starlink app made it easy to find the correct direction.
The built-in router meant there was no additional networking equipment to install. Most importantly, the Wi-Fi worked well for the two adults and children in our family, both inside and outside the caravan.
Starlink Mini with Roam will not be the cheapest internet option for every caravan, motorhome or campervan owner. However, it provides a practical, portable alternative when mobile reception or campsite Wi-Fi cannot be relied upon. The flexible Roam packages and £9 Standby Mode also make the service easier to manage between trips.
Not sure whether Starlink is the right internet option for your travels? Satellite broadband is only one way to stay connected on the road. Mobile data, 4G/5G routers and campsite Wi-Fi may be more suitable depending on where you travel, how much data you use and your budget.
